Financial success is a powerful motivator. And it controls the lives of many. It chooses occupations. It dictates how time, energy, and resources are spent. It influences relationships, schedules, and families. To some, it even becomes an all-consuming passion that leaves broken people and morality in its wake.

Unfortunately, it is not the greatest call that we have on our lives. In fact, compared to significance, it fades pretty quickly.

Consider the limitations of success:

• Success ebbs and flows with the economy. As recent years have proven, financial success is always at the mercy of a national economy and increasingly, a world economy. When the economy takes a downturn (as it always does), so does net worth.

• Success ends on the day you die. On the day you die, all wealth and possessions will be immediately transferred to someone else. And even if you get to pick where they go, the reality is that person is always someone other than you.

• Success is never enough. Financial success will never satisfy the inmost desires of our soul. No matter the amount of financial success earned, it always leaves us wanting more.

On the other hand, compare the advantages of significance:

• Significance always lasts. Significance will always outlast you. Even when you are no longer present, your significance will still be yours. And nothing can ever take that away from you.

• Significance carries on. Significance keeps on giving. When you positively change the life of another human being…  and that person changes the life of another… who impacts the life of another… who influences another…

• Significance satisfies our soul. While the thirst for success is never quenched, significance satisfies our deepest heart and soul. It allows us to lay our head on our pillow each night confident that we lived a valuable and fulfilling day.

Unfortunately, many people spend most of their lives chasing financial success. And while some achieve it more than others, almost all find it unfulfilling in the end. When they begin to shift their life focus to significance instead of success, they wonder why they wasted most of their life chasing something different.

Don’t waste any of your life. Seek significance today.

Here are just a few practical steps to get you started:

• Realize that life won’t last forever. Everyone knows that life will come to an end – but no one likes to think about it. That’s unfortunate. As soon as you start thinking about the end of your life, you begin to live differently in the present. You are never too young to start thinking about your legacy. How do you want people to remember you? And what do you really want to accomplish before you die? Make a list. Post it somewhere… because rarely will “drive a really nice car” ever appear.

• Live a life worth copying. Live with character, integrity, and morality. Your life should look the same in private as it does in   public. And while no one is perfect, just begin striving for a life of integrity. It will be noticed.

• Focus on people. Not dollars. Begin to transfer your life’s focus from your banking account to the people around you. Rather than worrying about the next get-rich-quick scheme, spend that energy focusing on your child, your neighbor, or the disadvantaged in your community.

• Start with one solitary person. Find one person who needs you today. Start there. Significance may be as inexpensive as one cup of coffee or as simple as one heartfelt question. If you are unsure where to start, try this, “No, how are you really doing?”

• Find a career outside your job. Sometimes, our day job leads to significance. But if yours does not, find a “career of significance” outside of your job by volunteering in a local organization. Most likely, your gifts, talents, or expertise are desperately needed. Use your job to pay the bills, but use your “new career” to pay your soul.

• Realize that significance is not dependent upon success. Too many people fall into the trap of thinking, “Once I make it rich, I’ll become significant.” This is rarely the case. Choose significance today. Begin striving for it now. If, then, financial success comes your way in the future, your mind will be in a better place to truly use your new success for broader significance.

• Reduce your expenses. Learn to live with less. Living with less frees up your life to invest into others. And living with reduced expenses allows you the freedom to not spend so much time at the office and more resources on others.

• Read biographies of people who sought significance rather than success. If you prefer recent history, read about Mother Teresa or Nelson Mandela. If you prefer older stories, give Mohandas Gandhi or Harriet Tubman a shot. Either way, their lives will inspire you to make more of yours.

Rarely do people look back on their lives and savor their professional achievements. Instead, they celebrate the impact they have had in the lives of others. Give yourself much to look back and celebrate. Stop chasing success. Start seeking significance.

I haven't got sufficient time.

When you hear yourself making this statement, you know deep inside it's not the fact.  The genuine truth is that you have not made that which you allegedly lack, time for, crucial enough.  You are actually pronouncing, "That just isn't critical enough to me.

• " I haven't got time to exercise.
  

• I haven't got time for a relationship.
  

• I haven't got time to start my very own business.
  

Naturally you have the time. You have as much time as any other person does, and others are doing these same things. The difference is they make it more of a concern in their lives than you do.

You are not a victim of circumstances. If you do not like your situation, change them. It's incredible that those who say they are out of time somehow find lots of time for other questionable activities, like watching TV . If you do not have the time to exercise, then certainly you do not have time watch TV . Such folks are truly exclaiming that exercise simply isn't important, YET, to them.

It's simpler to blame the issue on an absence of time, but the real issue is an absence of will.

I Don't Know How!

This is among the feeblest excuses of all. 

• I am not sure the correct way to make a blog.
  

• I am not sure the way to write well.
  

• I'm not sure how it's possible to get a more satisfactory job.
  

Are you capable of learning?  Did you stop after learning how to crawl, moaning, "I don't understand how to walk?" The reality behind "I have no idea how" is "I'm not keen to learn." To move forward, you've got to admit that you are lazy.

I haven't got the cash.

If there's something that you desire, "I do not have the money" is no excuse for not getting it.  It is always possible to earn the money or find some way to get the item at reduced cost.  The reality behind "I do not have the money" is "I do not want it badly enough."

Earning the cash you want is only a question of time, and we already realise that not having sufficient time is no good reason for giving up. If you'd like to buy something out of your price bracket, you are totally capable of setting it as a serious concern and then putting in the time to obtain the item.

Do not let excuses run your life.

If you catch yourself using one of those lines, right away swap it for a statement of the genuine truth. Initially that truth may appear uncomfortable. It's simpler to say, "I do not know how" than it is to claim, "I'm scared to learn."

But when you admit your reluctance, indolence, or absence of inducement, then you are eventually facing the truth, and from this point you could have the chance to grow. As an example, if you are facing your reluctance to learn, you'll decide that although it might be a large amount of work to learn a new ability, you might do it if you wanted it badly enough and truly applied yourself.

It's less complicated on our egos to blame failure on external, wild factors like shortage of time, info, or resources. But so long as we use such excuses, we will be able to never clear up the essential issues because those contributors are not under our direct control.

We want to invert our excuses and look underneath them to find the internal causes that we will be able to control. What we will be able to control, we will be able to improve. We will not control time, but we will be able to control how we prioritize the actions that fill that time.

We will not control info, but we will control what we decide to learn as well as how much effort we give to learning. We will not control money, but we are able to opt to do better income-producing activities.  So by controlling the factors that are inside our control, we are able to create as much time, info, and resources as we want.  Do not let your ego get in the way of your personal growth.  Gather the bravery to face the truth rather than making excuses.  Just when you admit the truth do you gain the power to handle it.  If you admit your idleness, you can work on that. If you admit your shortage of incentive or talent,  you can work on those too.  But you are helpless to work on time, info, or cash at once. Do not give away this power and doom yourself to infinite incompetency.

Shoot down your excuses, face the sour truth, and begin taking the steps important to change in the direction you wish to go.

I know my exact conversion statistics for my business and I use these to guide everything that I do. When I have a meeting with my team I am ALWAYS sure to relay these numbers to them because they are essential to the success of every member of my team.

One of my biggest hang-ups from the days when I was less than successful was not knowing the conversion figures of my business.To tell you the truth, when you spend your time calling leads, at the beginning, it's hard to even keep track of how reliable your figures are because you as a rep directly influence them.

For instance, if you're having an off day while calling prospects they'll pick up on it and this can drastically effect your conversion in a negative way. This is why I am such a large proponent for internet network marketing.

The figures never change and they never lie because the system does the selling NOT you. I tell my team if they can generate 100 leads in the course of a month they will at least recruit 5 new team members into their business. I know this because the numbers tell me.

Just knowing your sign up conversion ratio is just the beginning. 

• Do you know your retention rate?

• Do you know what percentage of people upgrade to the premium level in your business?

• Do you know how many people go out and duplicate your results?

If you don't, your homework for today is to find out.  Once you know the numbers, a clearly defined path to your success will show itself to you.

Then all that's left for you to do is work it!

When you say something like this:

I wish I could write better, but my writing skills aren’t very good.

… many intelligent, self-directed people are actually hearing this:

I wish I could write better, but I’m too lazy and undisciplined to do anything about it. I also have low self-esteem, which prevents me from believing I can correct this deficiency. You should probably avoid me and spend your time with someone more worthy.

Many people find their early education lacking when they reach adulthood. No one really knows what knowledge and skills will be important to you later in life. So they guess and they often guess wrong.

My early education was amazing in core subjects like English, math, science, and U.S. and European history. It also did a good job of teaching service to others, self-discipline, and character building. I’m lucky to have attended 12 years of private school, where the standards and quality of instruction were significantly higher than what my public school counterparts experienced. I don’t feel so lucky about all the religious nonsense that was drummed into me, but the secular subjects were taught in top-notch fashion.

As good as it was, my formal education was serious lacking in other areas like computer programming, psychology, interpersonal communication, public speaking, how to set and achieve goals, how to build courage, and how to build and run a successful business.

Much of the technology I use today didn’t exist when I was in school. The first time I used the Internet was when I started college, and that was in the pre-Web days. I certainly didn’t learn how to make a website or build an Internet business while I was in school.

In order to achieve my goals in life, I had to fill in many gaps in my formal education. This required a disciplined approach to self education. To this day I maintain this same discipline. I regularly identify gaps in my knowledge and skills that could hold me back from achieving my goals. Then I set educational goals to fill in those gaps, and I work step by step to achieve those goals. Usually this involves a combination of reading, connecting with experts and learning from them, and my own experimentation.

Never whine about your lack of skills or your weak education. Never use a lack of know-how as an excuse for not being able to achieve a goal. That’s low class behavior, and it surely won’t help. It’s also a great way to repel successful people from your life. One of my friends refers to such irresponsible loser types as plankton. That’s not a particularly compassionate label, but nor is “I don’t know how” a particularly good reason for failure.

You may feel deficient in some areas. That’s normal. If you feel your schooling didn’t do a very good job, that’s a shame, but it is what it is.

If you don’t know how, learn how. Use that fancy brain that learned how to walk, talk, and read. It’s still capable of further learning, is it not? Of course it is!

If you’re going to get anywhere in life, you must assume 100% responsibility for your ongoing education. Maybe your parents and the school system got you off to a good start. Maybe they didn’t. Whatever happened in that regard, the past is the past. You must now look to the future. Whatever you didn’t learn back then, you can start learning today. A few years from now, you can have the equivalent of a Ph.D in a subject you never studied before. You can master a new language. You can become an expert on a subject in which you’re merely a novice today.

Using “I don’t know how” as an excuse is truly pathetic today. In the information age where you can begin searching for such answers in seconds, this tired excuse only makes you look foolish, lazy, and unworthy of success. Even young children wouldn’t be stopped by such a phony obstacle.

The next time you feel inclined to say “I don’t know how,” say instead, “I’m learning how.” At least have the sense to Google “how to ___.” The information you need to get started is already at your fingertips.

Think about an educational deficiency you’d like to correct, and set a new educational goal right now. What exactly do you wish to learn, and how soon? Then plan out some of the steps you’ll need to take. Identify books to read, courses to take, and experts to talk to. Now get to work and start learning. Start by picking one book, buying it, and reading the first chapter. No more feeble excuses!

Problem: a fixed mindset causes undue stress

What is a key difference between those who dust themselves off and keep ‘moving forward’ after one of life’s ‘hits’ and those who drop like a stone?

One such key exists in the difference between a growth and a fixed mindset. I will be borrowing liberally from Mindset by Carol S. Dweck as well as other literature to explain the importance of this.

So what is a fixed mindset?

Basically, a fixed mindset believes you have some quality or you don’t. You’re good at something or you’re not. You’re smart or you’re not. You’re beautiful or you’re not.

So what, you say? It’s true. Some of us have inborn talent and some don’t. It’s obvious. Just look in the playground for example– some kids are good at football and some are not.

Only… a reading of books like The Talent Code, and Talent is Overrated strongly suggest that its not so. They looked at so-called geniuses (and also at the places in the world that produce exceptional talent) and concluded that an outrageous amount of the right kind of practice is really what separated the goods from the greats. In other words, anyone who works hard enough and applies themselves to developing skills the ‘right’ way can develop what looks and smells like genius.

Let me let you in on the secret. Growth oriented people don’t focus on the hit, they focus on the moving forward.

Fixed mindset people focus on what the hit means about them.

What develops the fixed mindset?

Ironically, praising or criticising a child for having (or lacking) a particular quality can start the problem. It seems more natural and easier to tell a child  “You’re so smart”. This could encourage the fixed mindset whereas “I’m so pleased you worked that out – encourages effort and further thinking.

So what keeps the fixed mindset in place?

Lack of awareness of the growth mindset is one reason!

Secondly, because of the way our minds look for evidence for what we already believe if we see the world through ‘some have it, some don’t’ eyes we’ll continue to do so unless we have a jolt that forces us to re-evaluate.

Here’s a jolt: if you have a fixed mindset you can kiss long-term high self-esteem good-bye. Why?

Because each time there’s a challenge to how smart and talented you are your self-esteem (which is based on this) is threatened.

Even if you overcome there can always be the lurking suspicion and fear about what will happen if you fail. You won’t be smart. Then what WILL you be? A loser?

Do you really want to think like that? Many do.

But the cost of such thinking is anxiety, avoidance, lack of growth, despair, self-criticism, unfulfilled potential blah, blah, yadah, yadah!

Now before you fall into a pit of despair I want to reassure you that there are ways to ameliorate this mindset.

As mentioned above, just learning about the new mindset can create a shift towards growth thinking.

1)  Learn to hear your fixed mindset voice

2) Recognize that you have a choice

3) Talk back to it with a growth mindset

       So many personal issues never change because we don’t think to challenge them.

4) Take growth mindset action

      Do something that reflects your new growth mindset.

The final word is this: a growth mind set helps you become MORE of who you truly are.  A fixed mindset  immobilises you and fossilizes your natural growth abilities inside a cocoon of having to prove yourself.

Go out and grow!
